My Weekly Cleaning Schedule for a Busy House

My Weekly Cleaning Schedule for a Busy House

I used to clean the whole house every Saturday. All of it: bathrooms, floors, dusting, sheets, the works. It took me most of the day, the kids were bored and underfoot, and by Monday morning it looked like I'd never done anything at all. By October of last year I was worn down and resentful, and I wasn't even keeping up.

So I tried breaking it up. Instead of one marathon, a little every weekday, each day with one focus. A year in, I can say this is the only system I've ever actually stuck with. It's not perfect, and some weeks it falls apart entirely, but most weeks the house stays at a level I can live with.

The basic idea

Every weekday has one main job that takes about 30 minutes. That's on top of the daily basics everybody does anyway: dishes, a quick kitchen wipe-down, a load of laundry, and our after-dinner tidy. The daily basics keep things from getting gross. The focus job keeps things actually clean.

Weekends are mostly off. That was important to me. Saturday is for the kids' soccer, yard work in the fall, and occasionally doing absolutely nothing.

My weekly schedule

Monday: bathrooms

We have one full bath and a half bath off our bedroom, which is typical for a ranch house built in the '70s. Monday makes sense because the weekend is hard on them. I spray everything first, wipe the mirrors and counters while the cleaner sits, then do toilets and the tub. Ella now cleans the bathroom sink and mirror herself for a little allowance.

Tuesday: dust and vacuum

This is the longest one. I start at the bedrooms at the end of the hall and work toward the living room, dusting first so everything falls to the floor, then vacuuming. The kids pick up their bedroom floors before school on Tuesdays, or their stuff goes into the "lost and found" basket.

Wednesday: kitchen and fridge

Wednesday is the day before I grocery shop at Aldi, so it's the perfect time to clean out the fridge. I wipe shelves, toss anything that's past saving, and write down what we already have so I don't buy a fourth jar of pickles. Then I wipe the cabinet fronts, the stovetop, and the microwave. This day has saved us real money. I waste far less food when I'm looking at the back of the fridge every week.

Thursday: floors

Mopping on Thursday means the floors look good heading into the weekend, which is when people tend to stop by. I use a simple mix of hot water and a squirt of dish soap for our old linoleum in the kitchen. A spray bottle of vinegar and water handles the bathroom tile.

Friday: sheets, then rest

I strip the beds in the morning, wash everything, and remake them by lunchtime. Then I stop. Friday afternoons are for library trips and pizza night, and I refuse to feel guilty about it.

What I don't put on the schedule

Some tasks only need doing every month or every season: windows, the oven, baseboards, the garage, the gutters. I keep a short list of these on the side of the fridge and pick one each week if I have extra time. If I don't, it waits. The house will not fall down if the baseboards go an extra month.

How I keep it cheap

My cleaning supplies cost roughly $12 to $15 a month. The main ones:

  • A gallon of white vinegar (about $3) for glass, tile, and the coffee maker
  • Baking soda for scrubbing tubs and sinks
  • Dish soap for almost everything else
  • One bottle of disinfecting bathroom cleaner, which lasts about two months
  • A pack of microfiber cloths I wash and reuse; I haven't bought paper towels for cleaning in over a year

One caution I learned the hard way: never mix vinegar with bleach, and never mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners. I keep them on different shelves now.

When the schedule falls apart

It happens. When Owen had strep last spring, I didn't touch the schedule for eight days. When that happens, I don't try to catch up on everything. I just start with whatever day it is. If it's Wednesday, I do the kitchen, and the bathrooms wait until next Monday. Trying to do the whole week in one day is how I end up back in the Saturday marathon.

This week has gone pretty well so far. It's Thursday, the leaves are starting to come down and get tracked in on everyone's shoes, and the kitchen floor is due. I'll mop after the kids get on the bus, and tomorrow afternoon is library day. That's the plan, anyway.
